Remembrance Day...A day to remember

Remembrance Day (11 November) marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

November is poppy month, the time of the year when by the wearing of a simple emblem, a red poppy, we salute the memory of those who sacrificed their health, their strength, even their lives, that we might live in a free country.
Long known as the corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas) because it flourishes as a weed in grain fields, the Flanders poppy as it is now usually called, grew profusely in the trenches and craters of the war zone. Artillery shells and shrapnel stirred up the earth and exposed the seeds to the light they needed to germinate.
In gratitude to those brave men and women, who went before us....

  1. Hello Julia, What a beautiful tribute today. So many have given so much; today's our time to remember with much thankfulness.

  2. I love what you have shared about the poppy. That is a great story and tribute those the brave men and women.

  3. Thanks Julia, what was touched by the story. I have been to Gallipoli and saw the trenches. I can pictured the poppy growing in those trenches - Hugs Naatima

  4. What a beautiful story and such an important reminder for us all to appreciate the men and women who have fought and those who continue to fight every day for our freedoms.

  5. And our country sets aside November 11 as Veterans' Day so we can remember all who have served the country. It's nice to know about your country's Remembrance Day.

  6. Great post for "Remembrance Day."
As my DH is a Vietnam Vet it is a special day for him and many others

  7. My beautiful daughter was born on this day. She turned 40 this year, & I found a Birthday Card for 40th with a red poppy, & it seemed so appropriate!
She got engaged so we are very thrilled~ they have been together 10 years, so about time....
